Scripture

And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and he said to him, “What do you command your servant, my lord?”

Joshua 5:14b NRSV

Background

God promised Joshua, the new leader and the army commander, that the city of Jericho would be delivered into the hands of the Israelites. As Joshua drew close to Jericho, one of God’s mighty angels appeared to him as a man with sword drawn. The angel told Joshua to take off his sandals because he was standing on holy ground.

Prayer

Dear Lord,

Guide me to live under your direction so that others may receive Your love through me. Fill me with your Spirit, so that even when I stumble and fall, I can pick myself up, ready to continue your work.

Amen.

NCC’s 2021 Lenten Reflections follow the Committee on the Uniform Series plan for reading and studying the Bible. Each Wednesday, we will share the scripture from the week’s Sunday Bible verses. We call on each of us to reflect on these passages of scripture during the seven weeks of Lent in light of your own experiences and relationships.
