The Bible and Christian Life

The National Council of Churches is proud, through its work in Christian Education, to have produced the Revised Standard Version (1952) and New Revised Standard Version (1989) Bible translations. In 2021, after commissioning the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) to review and update the NRSV, the NCC released the New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition (NRSVue).

The NRSVue continues in the tradition of the NRSV in being widely acclaimed by academic and church leaders and receiving broad ecumenical endorsement across Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox Church traditions. Click here for more information.

Through the Bible Translation and Utilization Committee, the NCC works to provide contemporary, ecumenical, accurate English translations of the Bible, and to promote the use of the Bible in public worship and education, and in private study and devotion. The latter ministry includes programs on Biblical literacy, translation, and interpretation, and supporting emerging scholars.

The International Sunday School Lessons Uniform Series (ISSL) offers a systematic study of the Bible.  Since 1872, Christians from a wide range of faith traditions have joined together to develop outlines for teaching the Bible.  Click here to connect.
