The National Museum of African American History and Culture Is Added to Program of Christian Unity Gathering
One of the most difficult tickets to obtain in DC, the museum is providing admission for CUG participants for the morning of November 9th.
The newest Smithsonian museum opened September 24, 2016, near the Washington Monument, and has welcomed more than 1 million visitors to date. It is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, art, history, and culture.
Collection highlights include Nat Turner’s Bible; an extensive repository of photos and film documenting everyday Black life; a segregation-era Southern Railway car; African-American ephemera examining the Double Victory Military Experience; Michael Jackson’s fedora; and works by prolific artists, such as Charles Alston, Elizabeth Catlett, Romare Bearden, and Henry O. Tanner.
This museum experience will be a powerful experience for everyone. It will provide the foundation for powerful new programs of the NCC that will be also announced at CUG.

About Vanita Gupta
Vanita Gupta serves as the President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the nation’s premier civil and human rights coalition. She is an experienced leader and litigator who has devoted her entire career to civil rights work. Most recently, from October 15, 2014, to January 20, 2017, she served as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General and head of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. Appointed by President Barack Obama as the chief civil rights prosecutor for the United States, Gupta oversaw a wide range of criminal and civil enforcement efforts to ensure equal justice and protect equal opportunity for all during one of the most consequential periods for the division.
Under Gupta’s leadership, the division did critical work in a number of areas, including advancing constitutional policing and criminal justice reform; prosecuting hate crimes and human trafficking; promoting disability rights; protecting the rights of LGBTQ individuals; ensuring voting rights for all; and combating discrimination in education, housing, employment, lending, and religious exercise. She regularly engaged with a broad range of stakeholders in the course of this work.
About the Awards Gala
The newest feature to the National Council of Churches’ signature event, the Christian Unity Gathering, is our annual awards gala where the top leaders in the ecumenical movement will be honored.
This year the awards banquet will take place at the Sheraton in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. It is included as part of your CUG registration fee; the cost is $150 if you wish to attend the gala by itself, without attending other CUG meetings and events.
We are proud to bring you this awards gala which will bring together today’s top faith leaders with those living out their calling to building peace and doing justice.

Before you panic, some good news. We are happy to share with you new options for how you register for the Christian Unity Gathering.
Convening Table Meetings – $250
First, we understand that sometimes coming to meetings is difficult. To help with this, for CUG2017 we have consolidated all Convening Table meetings on one day, Wednesday, Nov. 8. This will hopefully enable more of you to be involved, help keep momentum in our conversations, and enable more intensive work. If this seems like the option that fits you best, there is a reduced registration rate of only $250.
Entire Christian Unity Gathering – $395
As in previous years, the meetings of the Convening Tables are a part of the Christian Unity Gathering. This year we plan on having incredible content that will help focus us on our theme, Resilience, Resistance, and Persistence. Together we will explore what it means to be a Christian disciple in this time of anger, division, and struggle. We will hear from Bishop W. Darin Moore as well as many other high-quality panelists.
With these new options, of course, comes an end to our early bird registration. Those who have already registered using the early bird rate will have full access to the entire Christian Unity Gathering. This rate will end on June 16, so book now.
For a limited time, you can use the coupon code CT to get $50 off of the regular registration rate for the entire Christian Unity Gathering. This coupon will begin on June 16 and expire June 30 so don’t delay!
